EDMONTON- The Oklahoma City Barons are back in action Saturday night, after their American Hockey League Western Conference Final game was postponed Friday night due to severe weather.

A series of violent storms and tornadoes swept through Oklahoma City and its suburbs around 6:30 p.m., killing nine people.

During that time the Barons- the Edmonton Oilers farm team- were getting ready to hit the ice for pre-game warm-ups. But the Cox Convention Center was instead evacuated to a below-ground parking garage and the game was postponed.

“We were speaking with some of the staff of the Barons and they made it clear that the Cox Convention Center, the arena that the Barons play at, is one of the safest places to be,” Ryan Dittrick, a writer for edmontonoilers.com who is in Oklahoma City to cover the game, said over the phone Friday night.

The arena, including the Barons locker room, suffered severe leaking and flooding during Friday’s storm. However, crews worked quickly to get the facility back up and running, ready for Saturday night’s game.

And as a way to show their appreciation to their fans, the Barons have invited fans impacted by the storms to attend the Barons game on Saturday or Sunday at no charge. “Now that June has arrived, the Oklahoma City Barons are offering fans an opportunity to take their mind off of the weather and enjoy a Calder Cup playoff game,” Barons Owner Bob Funk Jr. said in a press release Saturday.
