Just ducky at Vernon Walmart

VERNON, BC — The garden centre at Vernon’s Walmart has become a nursery in the truest sense of the word.

It’s, of course, full of young plants waiting to be put in the ground but as staff recently discovered it’s also home to a mother duck, who decided a rack of greenery would be the perfect place to lay her eggs.

She’s laid six eggs and has become the store’s star attraction.

“It’s kind of like our own barnyard with one animal,” says Walmart employee, Edith Forsythe.

Garden centre manager, David Jones, made the discovery about two and a half weeks ago.

“I was out watering, came to the rack, heard something moving and there was a duck.”

Jones, an animal lover, immediately got to work to make her more comfortable

“I grabbed some of the reeds from another rack and made it a little more cozy for her.”

Jones also posted signs letting customers know that these plants are not for sale…

“I think it’s awesome what they’re doing to protect the duck and make sure she gets out safe.”

Jones will keep watch over the little family until the eggs hatch, then conservation officers will re-locate the birds to nearby BX Creek.
