‘Ride For Dad’ sets new record in Winnipeg

Every day in Canada, a dozen men die from prostate cancer. On Sunday, more Manitobans than ever before revved their engines in the hopes of leaving the disease in their dust.

The ‘Motorcycle Ride For Dad’ broke a record in Winnipeg with 1,002 riders taking part.

The annual events sees motorcycle enthusiasts ride from Polo Park Mall to Gimli and back to Winnipeg.

Organizers said the goal is to promote awareness and encourage men to talk about and seek help for prostate issues that may otherwise go undetected or untreated.

The man who founded ‘Ride For Dad’ said it’s amazing to see how far the event has come in just five years.

“Some days it almost makes me cry to think we started this whole thing a few years back and there were about 80 people turned out at the first ride and we raised 20-thousand dollars. Today we got a crowd like this.” Said an emotional Garry Janz, National President for Motorcycle Ride for Dad.

“It just brings tears to my eyes sometimes.”

Saturday’s event raised a record $215,000 dollars in donations bringing the five year total in Winnipeg to more than $575,000.

All money raised goes toward funding prostate cancer research.
