Northern Sask. students get memorable hockey experience

SASKATOON – A group of students from northern Saskatchewan had the opportunity of a lifetime, taking part in Northern All-Stars Day.

Forty-five students from Fond du Lac, Wollaston Lake and Black Lake arrived in Saskatoon by charter plane yesterday and took part in a hockey camp with former NHL player Rich Pilon.

“I always believe that anytime that you can be part of a kid’s life and hopefully make a difference, that’s the most important thing in life,” said Pilon.

Principal of the Black Lake students Steven Thatcher said it was great for the kids to get out of their remote community and come to Saskatoon.

“I’ve had an awesome day,” said student Martin Isadora.

The gasps were audible when students were surprised with a visit from the Stanley Cup and Memorial Cup trophies.

“This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for these kids,” said Johnathon Huntington, director of volunteers and sponsorship for the Memorial Cup.

The fun didn’t end there as the group was off to the final round robin game at the Memorial Cup between the Saskatoon Blades and the Portland Winterhawks.

“They’ve earned this opportunity through the commitment they’ve shown to the schools and their communities,” said Huntington.
