SASKATOON – Police are warning people about a fake jewellery scam popping up around Canada.

Scammers will approach potential buyers on the street and offer to sell high-quality jewellery for a good price.

Kim Allers of Edmonton paid a little more than $300 for a small handful of what he thought were gold items, paying cash to the sellers who claimed they needed the money to return home to Portugal.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Allers took the items to a jewellery shop, where acid tests revealed the items to be fake.

On Sunday, a man and woman were swindled out of their money after they were approached by a group of adults and children in a parking lot of a Saskatoon business.

The group claimed to be a family in financial distress and were selling jewellery to make some money.
