Downtown skyscraper to soar 42 storeys

WINNIPEG — A new mixed-use downtown skyscraper will “transform the skyline of the city,” developers said at a news conference in Winnipeg Wednesday.

Ontario-based Fortress Real Developments and Mady Development Group announced the plans at the site for the new building, on the corner of Gary Street and Graham Avenue.

The new skyscraper will be largest free-standing building between Toronto and Calgary.  The latest design concepts show 42 storeys, and 300,000 square feet with 25,000 allotted for a possible grocery store and additional space for what the developers call “Class ‘A’ retail.”

Mayor Sam Katz called the plan “perfect” for Winnipeg because it promises residential, retail, commercial and parking spaces in the city’s troubled downtown core.

Fortress said it hopes to have an approved design for the massive development by the end of this year.  By the spring of next year, it hopes to have a 15-foot-high replica model to display and shovels in the ground by next fall.

Mady said this will be their first project west of Ontario in Canada and this project is definitely going to happen.

The developers encouraged people to visit Liveworkplaywinnipeg.com to give input on what exactly they want to see in the building.

Projected completion of the building is planned for 2017.
