CALGARY- The long-term plan for a popular ski hill in Banff has been released, and it includes environmental protection along with some new attractions for outdoor enthusiasts.
On Tuesday, the federal environment minister approved the Mt. Norquay long range plan, outlining the area’s development over the next five to 15 years.
One of the highlights is the installation of a via ferrata, which is a cable-assisted hiking and climbing route. A tea house is also being reopened at the top of the mountain and will be an observation area in the summer.

The hill also plans to add new ski runs, widen current ones and modify a terrain park.
“Our approach to ski area planning recognizes that downhill ski areas are the cornerstone of winter tourism,” Kent added.
The Norquay resort will also work to improve surrounding habitat, including closing a ski run that passes through a wildlife corridor.
