SASKATOON – A white beefalo has a new home to roam in Saskatoon.

The four-year-old calf is a Charolais and bison hybrid and is now living at the Saskatoon Forestry Farm.

It looks similar to a white buffalo, which First Nations and Métis people consider sacred.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Zoo manager John Moran said they will use its new animal to tell the traditional Lakota story of the White Buffalo Calf Woman.

A sign explaining the significance will be put up at the bison exhibit.

Saskatoon Tribal Council said in a news release Thursday that the beefalo is an opportunity to educate the public on First Nations culture.

The council also said it also creates awareness of the work the White Buffalo Youth Lodge does to promote a positive quality of life to all inner city youth in Saskatoon.
