A young child was injured after being struck by a vehicle near a downtown Kingston park on Wednesday, police say.
Kingston police and Frontenac paramedics were called to City Park just before 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon after receiving reports of a pedestrian hit on Bagot Street.
According to police, a 5-year-old male child was struck, and sent to hospital with serious injuries.
On Thursday, Principal of Queen’s University Patrick Deane released a statement, confirming that the child was hit during an outing with Queen’s camp, a children’s summer camp run by the university.
In the statement, Deane said the child was rushed to hospital, where it was determined he had non-life-threatening injuries. Now, he says staff at the university will be looking into the incident.
“I have directed the provost to ensure this incident is fully reviewed. I have also directed all staff at Queen’s camps to immediately review their safety procedures,” Deane said in his statement.
Deane also commended camp staff, who he said acted quickly under “very difficult circumstances.”
Additionally, Deane says Queen’s will be offering counselling for anyone affected by the incident.
