Quebec corruption inquiry shifts focus to Laval

MONTREAL – The Quebec corruption inquiry has shifted its focus to Laval, the municipality across the river from Montreal.

Laval’s longtime mayor, Gilles Vaillancourt, was among several dozen people recently arrested.

The charges laid again him included gangsterism and directing a criminal organization.

The inquiry will spend the next several weeks sifting through Laval’s affairs, after focusing mainly on Montreal in recent months.

The first witness to appear before the inquiry was Jean Roberge, who was most recently Laval’s assistant city manager.
