Toronto Mayor John Tory is set to have an operation Wednesday to fix his Achilles tendon, his office has announced.
The operation is scheduled to happen at Humber River Hospital.
“The mayor thanks the many Toronto residents who have reached out to wish him well ahead of the surgery,” Lawvin Hadisi, a spokesperson for Tory, said in a statement.
“During the surgery, Deputy Mayor Denzil Minnan-Wong will be serving as acting mayor.”
Hadisi said Tory will not attend public events for 10 to 14 days but is expected to participate in briefings and meetings beginning on Thursday or Friday.
“I’ve never had surgery before so I’ll admit to being a bit apprehensive about it all,” Tory told reporters Tuesday morning.
“The hardest part for me will probably be … to be in an enforced period of inactivity.”
He added that he will likely be in bed for around 10 days following the operation and then be on crutches for a few months after that.
Since announcing the operation, he has received numerous messages from well-wishers on Twitter, with over 100 responses to his initial tweet discussing the surgery.
