Province lays off palliative home care nurses

CALGARY- Alberta Health Services is laying off almost half of the province’s palliative home care nurses.

24 of about 50 registered nurses in the program are losing their jobs.

Jacki Capper, president of local 211 of the United Nurses of Alberta, says the cuts are equivalent to the elimination of almost seven full-time positions, and calls it ‘the decimation of palliative care.’

In a news release, AHS claims patients will not notice any change in care levels with plans to hire more licensed practical nurses.

The nurses affected by the layoffs will be able to apply for other positions.

Capper says a week ago, AHS laid off 21 Calgary nurses in after-hours care and 19 Calgary nurses in chronic disease management.
