Penguins settle into a new home at Assiniboine Park Zoo

New African black-footed penguins meet the public at Assiniborne Park Zoo. Global News Winnipeg

Some sharply-dressed water fowl can now be seen at the Assiniboine Park Zoo.  Mooshu, Sal and Tubbs are three African black-footed penguins that were unveiled to the public on May 10th, 2013.

“Penguin Cove” is the new seasonal exhibit running until Sept. 30th. These small birds are drawing in a pretty big fan base.   Two Brazilian high school exchange students couldn’t believe their eyes. “It’s just amazing for us because it is our first time seeing them and they are just so cute and you just want to hug them and touch them.”

With the zoo going through a major overhaul, staff hopes this attraction will keep visitors coming in.  Zoological Director, Tim Sinclair Smith says the goal is to educate while entertaining. “There are a lot of threatened endangered species out there” he said, “This exhibit is specifically design to raise awareness about these issues.”

A portion of funds raised will go toward conservation programs.
