WINNIPEG – Three well-dressed birds flew into the Winnipeg airport on Tuesday evening.
The African black-footed penguins go on display at the Assiniboine Park Zoo Penguin Cove exhibit at 11 a.m. Friday.
“The penguins are in good spirits and adapting well to their new surroundings,” Tim Sinclair-Smith, the zoo’s director of zoological operations, said in a news release. “This is the first time we’ve ever had penguins at the Assiniboine Park Zoo and we hope this will be a real hit with the public.”
Penguin Cove, which will be open until Sept. 30, will teach visitors about threats to penguins in the wild and associated conservation efforts. The birds are on loan from the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta.
The penguins are currently adapting to the zoo and will make their initial media appearance on Friday at 10 a.m., shortly before the exhibit opens to the public.
