SASKATOON – Advanced Education Minister Don Morgan says it’s up to the University of Saskatchewan to determine what number of animals is needed on campus.
The university said last week that it will sell its flock of 300 sheep because it needs to save money – the school is facing a projected $44.5-million deficit in its operating budget by 2016.
Morgan says the university is looking at many ways to save money and the province doesn’t tell them how to do it.
New Democrat Warren McCall, who raised the issue in the legislature, argues the university has been forced to cut the program because it doesn’t get enough money from the province.
Sheep have been on the campus since 1911 and the College of Agriculture launched a class on sheep this past term.
The University of Saskatchewan says it will buy sheep as needed for future teaching and research.
