CALGARY- Many Calgarians took advantage of unseasonably warm temperatures over the weekend to get their yards ready for summer, but were frustrated to find out the city does not have spring leaf drop-off sites.
Last week, Mike Lockie took his leaves to his front curb along with his garbage and recycling. While crews emptied his blue and black carts, the bags of leaves were left behind.

“I phoned the city and asked them what was going on,” he says, adding the city said, “‘Well we just couldn’t get enough trucks out at the time’ and that they would send something around the next day to pick up the excess, which they did.”
City trucks can fill up quickly this time of year, requiring drivers to come back later. To get rid of debris, some Calgarians have been dumping bags at Confederation Park. The site is usually used for fall leaves, but not for spring—meaning dropping off leaves there is currently illegal.
For the first time, the city is letting Calgarians drop off yard waste at landfills for free, though many people Global News spoke with have no interest in driving all the way to the dump to get rid of a few bags. You can take your yard waste there until June 2.
