A new telephone area code has been approved for Saskatchewan.
The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission has given the go-ahead for a 474 code to come into effect in about 2 1/2 years.
The CRTC had been told that the 306 and 639 area codes were projected to be exhausted by 2022.

The commission looked into the matter and determined the two existing codes would reach their “exhaust date” in September of that year.
The CRTC says the proposed start date of October 2021 will give customers enough notice and lead time before the projected exhaustion date.
Saskatchewan has had the 306 area code since 1947; the 639 area code was added in 2013.
