In the Elevator: Mike McEwen

Mike McEwen skips one of the best rinks in the world.  But he freely admits he is about to be the second-best curler in his own home.

McEwen visited the Morning News to talk about the great season his team had:  second on the World Curling Tour money list ($108,861 in winnings), runnerup in five consecutive events including the Players Championship, and a fifth-straight playoff appearance at the provincial championships.

On the way out, we asked about his summer wedding to Dawn Askin — who plays lead for Jennifer Jones’ team.

At 32, McEwen has the skills to compete with the best rinks in the world.  His win and seven finals appearances on the WCT this season attest to that.  But he says his fiancée, who is a three-time Canadian champion, is a step ahead.

“I’m really good at my position, maybe not the best,” McEwen says.  “I consider (Dawn) probably the best at her position.  So she’s probably better.”

With Askin being the best in the world, you might think McEwen would want to tap into that toward the end of their respective careers and form a powerful mixed team.  Then again, for the sake of a healthy marriage, maybe they shouldn’t.

“We tried that mixed double thing in a funspiel.  But we didn’t talk to each other that night, so … it’s not on the table right now.”
