CALGARY- A large grassfire threatened homes in southeast Calgary on Friday afternoon.

The blaze broke out in Fish Creek Park around 3:30 p.m. It quickly spread into the community of Deer Run, and crews were concerned that it would spread to homes.

“I saw big smoke coming from across the way, and once it crested that ridge the wind was picking it up,” says Dave Isley, who lives in the area. “As it came up the flames were eight 10 or 12 feet high.”

A number of emergency crews rushed to the scene.

“The wind was in the right direction,” says Batt. Chief Paul LeBlanc. “We had our crews on scene very quickly and they were able to establish a perimeter and not allow it to get into the homes.

“We also called Sustainable Resources and they ended up showing up with a few helicopters and they managed to put a lot of the fire out in the thick brush.”

Ccrews managed to get control of the fire in about an hour—with no damage to homes.

Conditions in and around Calgary are dry, and earlier this week Rocky View County issued a ban on permitted burning.
