REGINA – With fears of an impending flood, the City of Moose Jaw has opened its two dams to allow more water to flow through. The Moose Jaw River, fed exclusively by runoff, is now swollen from the spring melt.

“I guess the challenge is waiting for the weather to warm up, and I guess the longer that it takes the more it works in our favour, but the anticipation is that we’ll see a spike in temperatures this weekend,” said Rod Montgomery from the Moose Jaw Fire Department.

Residents like Jim Hughes are also working to protect their belongings from rising water levels.

“We got all the electronics out of the basement, unplugged everything, we’ve got everything… as high as you can get it, and are hoping for the best,” he said.

But residents of Moose Jaw said they’re not letting fears of flooding get in the way of their lives.

“I’ve dealt with bigger and worse things in life, so this is just another life lesson… You deal with it and learn from it and go from there,” Hughes said.
