The 2017 death of Benjamin Lokeny, who was found in Halifax’s north end after being assaulted, is being added to the province’s Rewards for Major Unsolved Crimes Program.
Police found the man laying on the ground on the corner of Buddy Daye and Gottingen streets on July 20, 2017.
Lokeny, 51, had been the victim of a serious assault, police said. He was taken to hospital and remained in a coma until he died on Aug. 28, 2017.
Last week, a year and a half after his death, police ruled his death a homicide. Police believe Lokeny had been assaulted by another man who was known to him.
“The assault and subsequent death of Mr. Lokeny was tragic. Unsolved crimes such as this are also very difficult for the community,” said Justice Minister Mark Furey in a news release.
“I hope that adding this case to the rewards program will encourage people to come forward with information that may help to solve this crime and provide his family, and the community, with closure.”
The Rewards for Unsolved Crimes Program offers up to $150,000 to anyone who has information that leads to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for a crime. Tipsters who come forward with information must give their name and contact information. They may be called to testify in court and all calls will be recorded.
