A 20-year-old Hamilton man is facing drug and weapon charges after he allegedly attempted to evade police by running away.

Officers say that while on patrol at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, the man noted their presence as he was walking down the sidewalk on Wilson Street approaching Victoria Avenue. He then allegedly cut across five lanes of traffic in an attempt to evade the officers.

Police say they were able to catch up to the man and identified an outstanding arrest warrant for him for failure to appear in court.

After a search, Hamilton police say they found crystal meth, drug paraphernalia and bear spray — which is considered an illegal concealed weapon, according to police — in the man’s possession.

The man was taken into custody and was scheduled to appear in court Wednesday to answer for charges of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a controlled substance and failure to comply undertaking.
