An RCMP investigation has determined that the alleged attempted abduction of a teenage girl in Westlock, Alta., earlier this week was “fabricated,” police said Friday night.
On Tuesday, police issued a news release in which they asked the public for tips as they searched for two suspects in connection with the incident.
At the time, RCMP said they were told that a 15-year-old girl broke free from two people who reportedly tried to abduct her at an arena on Monday night.
They said the teen was reportedly sitting alone at the Spirit Centre Arena at around 9:30 p.m. when she was approached by a male and a female.
According to the RCMP, police were told the suspects told the girl they had been asked to bring her to her parents, grabbed her by the arm and forced her to a stairway before the girl reportedly escaped.
“After a detailed investigation was conducted… the matter has been resolved and no charges have been laid,” police said in a news release issued Friday night.
“I want to ensure the public that their safety was not at risk as a result of this incident,” Cpl. Filipe Vicente said. “We understand that the public was very concerned by this information, and we are pleased to be able to provide this update that the incident did not occur.”
Westlock is located about 90 km north of Edmonton.
