Two construction companies fined in Saskatoon court

SASKATOON – Two construction companies were fined in Saskatoon this month, one for an unsafe workplace and another for labour standard violations.

A Winnipeg construction company has been fined $2,800 after a workplace injury in Saskatoon. McDiarmid Lumber Ltd. pleaded guilty to one count of failing to ensure that a worksite was under the complete control of the employer and safe.

McDiarmid was the contractor at a residential jobsite in 2010 when a worker employed by a sub-contractor fell from a roof onto an air compressor.

Two other charges against the Manitoba business were stayed.

A Saskatoon-based construction company was also fined in April, this time under the Saskatchewan Labour Standards Act.

Carmen Hill, operating as Hill Framing and Renovations, was found guilty on three charges and fined $600.

The company’s charges included failing to send final wages by registered mail and failing to pay annual holiday dues within 14 days of termination.
