Durham Regional Police say they have charged a 17-year-old Whitby man after he originally reported being shot by an unknown person but it was later determined he shot himself by accident.

Police said officers were called around 2:15 p.m. on Jan. 10 to a plaza near Salem Road and Kingston Road East in Ajax for a man who had been shot.

He was taken to a trauma centre with non-life threatening injuries.

At the time, police said a witness reported four suspects – three teenage men and one female – driving away in a van or a large SUV.

However, after further investigation, officers said they determined the victim shot himself by accident.
