Suspect arrested after IHA building in downtown Kelowna briefly evacuated

RCMP in Kelowna have taken one man into custody after a downtown building had to be evacuated Wednesday morning.

According to police, RCMP received a report of some kind of a threat received via text message by Interior Health Authority (IHA) staff at about 9:30 a.m.

As a result, the IHA building on the corner of Doyle Ave. and Ellis St. was briefly evacuated.

This is the second time the IHA building has been evacuated in the past two weeks.

On Feb. 20, employees were forced out into the street after a suspicious package was located on the second floor.

It turned out to be an open and unattended duffel bag.

The latest incident brought out RCMP officers, along with the Kelowna RCMP Police Dog Services section.

“We take all complaints of threats very seriously,” RCMP Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey said. “An ongoing risk assessment was conducted, as police continued their investigation into both the source and nature of the threat received.”

A person believed to be responsible for uttering the threat has since been taken into police custody and may face charges.

“At this time, RCMP do not believe that the general public is at any risk,”  O’Donaghey said.

Police have not disclosed the nature of the threat.
