Family identifies man killed in highway collision near Taber

A family member has identified the man who died in a two-vehicle collision near Taber.

On Wednesday, 39-year-old Charles Russell was behind the wheel of his family’s van, travelling with his 27-year-old wife and two daughters on Highway 36 when the northbound vehicle collided head-on with a southbound truck.

Russell died at the scene, but his three family members all survived the collision, suffering various injuries.

One of his children was flown by STARS Air Ambulance to the Alberta Children’s Hospital in Calgary where family say she underwent brain surgery and is said to be recovering well.

Another child is also in hospital recovering from non-life-threatening injuries. Russell’s widow suffered leg injuries but is now out of hospital and with her children.

A GoFundMe page has been created by Russell’s niece to help support his surviving family members.

As of 3 p.m. Friday, the campaign had collected more than $1,000 of its $5,000 fundraising goal.

Charles Russell is described by family as a giving and funny person, loved by many.

Taber RCMP continue to investigate Wednesday’s collision but were not providing any updates as of Friday afternoon.
