The city of Hamilton will study installing lighting along the Red Hill Valley Parkway (RHVP).
News of the study comes as Hamilton City Council is still reeling from the revelation that a pavement safety report didn’t make its way to council for six years.
Currently, lighting on the RHVP is mostly on the exit and entrance ramps as well as at cross-street overpasses.
Ward 5 Coun. Chad Collins says light pollution may not be the concern it once was.
He says lighting can be “specifically directed to certain areas and light pollution can be reduced based on the type of poles and type of lights you use.”
Collins acknowledges there are people who live next to the parkway, but adds the impact can be controlled.
Lighting the parkway will be part of a larger operational review of both the RHVP and the Linc that will also look at the possibility of road widening and median safety barriers.
The city’s new engineering director Gord McGuire says new lighting on both roadways could run between $12.5 million and $18 million.
Hamilton will spend $15 million this spring repaving the RHVP to deal with any slippery road surfaces.
