When people in Winnipeg talk about Transcona, it is not uncommon for negative stereotypes or comments to come up.
Recently elected Transcona councillor Shawn Nason says that mentality should shift now that the tight-knit community has grown to almost 45,000 residents.
“We’re a very diverse community. We have people coming from all around the world calling Transcona home. I think it’s an affordable community and I think that’s drawing more and more people to the community.”
“I invite people to come and experience Transcona,” he said.
Nason said events like the Hi Neighbour Festival highlight the strong sense of community.
“We have an identity and we’ve embraced the flamingo and we will continue to embrace it. It’s like a badge of honour, to be proud of being from Transcona.”
Joel Fulton and his wife Amy moved to the community with their kids and have embraced all the activities in the area.
“I had heard bad things about it before being in this area, but I’ve liked it since being here. I’ve heard it’s bad but I’m not too sure why really,” he said.
“It’s a nice enough little place … it has everything you need and a bit more of a community feel.”
