Quebecers trapped in Haiti as violent protests continue

Dozens of Quebec tourists are confined to their hotel in Haiti’s Côte des Arcadins as violent protests rock the country.

The tourists are trapped at the Royal Decameron Resort, which is about 75 kilometres north of Port-au-Prince, because their tour company said it cannot guarantee safe transport to the airport due to the political crisis.

Quebec Minister of International Relations Nadine Girault said Thursday she is in close communication with the federal government and they are following the situation closely.

“I have people that are close to me who are there also. I know they are doing everything possible to bring them back safely, but we also have to deal with the situation there, which is not safe at all (to) travel between the hotel and the airport,” she said.

“So, they are better off in the hotel. We’re just making sure that they’re going to be coming back home safely.”

Demonstrators have been demanding for the last week that President Jovenel Moïse step down.

They are protesting the disappearance of $4 billion scheduled to be used for social development.

At least nine people have been killed in the demonstrations.
