Here is a chance to get a jump start on your spring cleaning, thanks to the City of Winnipeg.
The city announced the launch of a new mattress recycling program Wednesday, in partnership with Winnipeg-based Mother Earth Recycling.
For a limited time, Winnipeggers will be able to drop off up to six mattresses and box springs at the Brady 4R Winnipeg Depot for free.
The program will run until Jan. 31, 2020, or until a total of 8,000 mattresses are collected. It comes with a $193,000 contribution from the city.
“Waste diversion is a critical part of the city’s efforts to mitigate the impacts of climate change and extend the life of the Brady Road Resource Management Facility,” said Coun. Cindy Gilroy (Daniel McIntyre), chair of the standing policy committee on water and waste.
“We’re excited to find a partner in Mother Earth Recycling that will help us pilot this program, and do so in a way that provides meaningful employment and training opportunities in the Indigenous community.”
Mother Earth Recycling is an Indigenous social enterprise, with the goal of creating employment for members of the city’s Indigenous community through environmentally sustainable projects.
The city won’t accept mattresses that are wet, mouldy, soiled, burnt, or infested with bedbugs.
Other related items that will not be accepted as part of the recycling program include air mattresses, waterbeds, bed frames and sofa bed frames.
