A group of LaSalle taxi drivers are complaining their cars are being targeted by smash-and-grabbers.
Angrignon Taxi Company says vandals have smashed windows of at least 15 cars since Sunday.
Several of these alleged smash-and-grabs have been caught on CCTV cameras.
One taxi driver says he woke up last Monday to find his car window smashed in, and debris all over his car.
He says with costs to fix the window and lost wages, it cost him about $500.
He says other friends are in the same boat.
“Last night, I went to the police,” said driver Manjinder Chhina. “Today, I asked them, I said, ‘What do you do? Last night, they broke six cars in the area. Day before, they broke three cars. Same day, my car is broken, they broke three or four.”
Chhina says most of the break-ins happened between 1 a.m. and 4 a.m. He says most taxi drivers don’t leave money in their cabs, but the damage to their cars is expensive. He says he hopes to see police do more.
“They should have more patrol, check the cameras. They should work hard to catch the guy because since five days, he is non-stop,” Chhina says.
The president of Angrignon Taxi, Gurdev Singh Grewal, says many drivers remain on edge.
He says most haven’t lost a lot of money because they don’t keep cash in their cars overnight. But he says drivers remain concerned they are going to be targeted next.
“Obviously, I am worried with 10 cars broken in a week,” Grewal said. “And up to now, the answer we get is, ‘We are trying.’ And to me, this is not good enough.”
Montreal police say they can’t comment on this case for privacy reasons.
