While some may be tempted to skate on lakes and ponds during the recent cold spell, the City of Surrey says local bodies of water may not be as frozen as you think.
The warning came after police were called to a partially frozen duck pond near 194 Street and 68 Avenue by residents who were concerned some kids would fall through the thin ice.

“At this time, there is no way for us to know if the ice is thick enough and it would vary in any body of water so therefore, if you venture out into an area where the ice isn’t as thick, it could be very dangerous so we encourage all those people to stay off ice surfaces at this time,” Surrey’s acting parks manager Hugh Norris said.
The city is encouraging anyone who sees a safety risk in a park to call them at 604-501-5050.
