Northumberland OPP said they were investigating a "serious incident" which prompted the closure of the Campbellford detachment on Monday – Feb 4, 2019

Northumberland OPP closed its detachment in Campbellford on Monday following the discovery of a body near the building.

OPP initially would not comment on the discovery but freelance videographer Pete Fisher tweeted that a shooting had occurred on the shoulder of Industrial Drive near the detachment. Campbellford is approximately 53 kilometres southeast of Peterborough.

OPP stated that they are investigating a “serious incident” and that “no officers were harmed during this incident.”

In a statement issued mid-afternoon, Const. Kim Johnston said OPP confirmed a male was found deceased. No other details were provided.

“This incident is deemed non-suspicious in nature and police confirm there is no risk to public safety,” she said. “No officers were harmed as a result of this incident.”

OPP say the detachment will be closed for the next 24 hours as officers investigate and will resume regular business hours on Tuesday.

Industrial Drive was closed from County Road 30 to the Ranney Gorge Bridge on Trent Drive for several hours but has since reopened.

According to the OPP, the Special Investigations Unit was contacted however, the SIU will not be invoking its mandate. The SIU investigates if there is interaction between police and civilians which result in serious injuries, death or involve a sexual assault.

Members of the Northumberland OPP Crime Unit in conjunction with the Ontario Coroner’s Office are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the death.
