The city of Portage la Prairie is set to become Canada’s curling mecca in 2020.
Portage has been awarded four different Canadian championships that will be contested over a nine-day stretch next year.
Curling Canada announced that Portage will play host to the Canadian Senior Men’s and Women’s Championships, the national Mixed Doubles Championship, as well as both the Canadian university and Canadian college championships.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for the dedicated curling fans of Manitoba to be able to watch a wide array of talent in one community,” the Chair of Curling Canada’s Board of Governors Maureen Miller said in a media release.
“Portage la Prairie has shown in the past that it has a superb group of volunteers, and I know they’re ready to get to work to make sure curlers, fans and officials are welcomed with open arms.”

Portage has staged major curling events before, hosting the 2018 Canadian Mixed Doubles Trials and the 2017 Viterra Championship.
“The City of Portage la Prairie is excited to host some of Canada’s best and brightest curlers in March 2020 and showcase what we have to offer to a national audience once again,” Portage la Prairie Mayor Irvine Ferris said.
The four events will be contested at both the 1,600 seat Stride Place and the Portage Curling Club from March 13-22.

It’ll be the first time the Canadian Mixed Doubles Championship and the U Sports Curling Championships are held in Manitoba. Portage previously hosted the Canadian Seniors in 1986 and 2000. The college championships were last played in the province in 1987, hosted by Brandon.
The two post-secondary events will run from March 13-17.
The Canadian Seniors are scheduled for March 17-22, and the Mixed Doubles will go from March 18-22.
