One person is dead and three others were injured in a crash in northeast Calgary on Monday night.
Police said a 2009 BMW was heading east on Sunridge Way N.E. near 36 Street N.E. at around 10:15 p.m.
“It is believed that the [20-year-old] driver lost control of the vehicle and struck the south shoulder concrete barrier, which directed the vehicle eastward across a concrete traffic island before striking the concrete barriers that separate 36 Street N.E. from the CTrain right-of-way,” policed said on Tuesday.
EMS said four men — two 19-year-olds and two 20-year-olds, according to police — were taken to hospital. Police said one 19-year-old passenger had life-threatening injuries and was later pronounced dead in hospital. The other three had minor injuries.
Police said drugs and alcohol were not factors, but they are still investigating whether speed played a role.
The collision caused the closure of southbound lanes of 36 Street N.E. as police investigated and cleared debris. In addition, CTrains were shut down between the Marlborough and Rundle stations.
