Alberta’s Desmond Young has advanced to the championship pool at the Canadian junior curling championships.
Young defeated Ontario’s Sam Steep 5-4 in a tiebreaker on Wednesday morning.
The Edmonton-based Alberta squad rallied from a 4-2 deficit by scoring two points in the eighth end and one in the 10th on a steal.
“Both of our teams are pretty evenly matched and there were some great shots made,” said Young. “It was a very exciting game and we’re very happy to come out with the win.”
Alberta advances to the championship side along with two-time reigning champ Tyler Tardi of B.C., Saskatchewan’s Rylan Kleiter, Quebec’s Vincent Roberge, Northern Ontario’s Tanner Horgan, Nova Scotia’s Graeme Weagle, Manitoba’s JT Ryan and Greg Blyde’s Newfoundland and Labrador squad.

On the women’s side, the teams advancing to the championship round are Alberta’s Selena Sturmay, Sarah Daniels of B.C., Manitoba’s Mackenzie Zacharias, Quebec’s Laurie St-Georges from Quebec, Saskatchewan’s Sara England (4-2), Nova Scotia’s Kaitlyn Jones, New Brunswick’s Justine Comeau and Northern Ontario’s Kira Brunton.
Two draws of championship pool play were held later Wednesday.
The winning teams will represent Canada at the 2019 world junior championships, Feb. 16-23 in Liverpool, N.S.
