MRU reveals proposed program cuts

CALGARY- Mount Royal University has revealed which programs it is considering cancelling in order to make up for a $14 million dollar shortfall in its operating budget.

MRU was left with a budget deficit after the Redford government cut post-secondary funding in the March provincial budget.

The programs on the chopping block include:

– Advanced studio perinatal and neonatal nursing certificate
– Theatre arts diploma, performance and technical streams
– Diploma music performance, classical and jazz stream
– Engineering transfer program
– Diploma disabilities studies
– Certificate forensics
– Certificate journalism

The proposed cuts were announced at a town hall meeting on the campus Tuesday afternoon.

The cuts will go before the General Faculties Council on Thursday.

Cuts to administrative services and student affairs could be announced by the end of May.

In a staff memo, the dean of the Faculty of Continuing Education, Norma MacIntosh, writes “This is a difficult day for everyone at MRU, we will work to support one another as best we can.”
