More than 3,000 Brazilian police officers stormed the biggest shantytown in Rio de Janeiro Sunday to drive out drug gangs, in a move to increase security in the city ahead of the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games. It took police about 90 minutes to seize control of Rocinha, home to about 100,000 citizens. It’s estimated approximately one-third of Rio’s population of six million live in shantytowns, known as favelas.
