Two pedestrians have died after being struck by a vehicle in northwest Calgary on Monday morning.
Police were called to John Laurie Boulevard and Hawkwood Drive N.W. after reports of a fatal pedestrian collision at around 11:40 a.m.
“It is believed a Toyota 4-Runner was southbound on Hawkwood Drive and turned left onto eastbound John Laurie Boulevard, where the vehicle came in contact with two pedestrians who were crossing John Laurie Boulevard,” a police news release said Thursday.
A woman was pronounced dead at the scene, EMS said, and a man was taken to hospital in life-threatening condition. Police confirmed to Global News at about 4 p.m. on Monday that the man had died as a result of his injuries.
Police said on Thursday that the woman was 67 and the man was 64.
Calgary Transportation tweeted shortly after noon on Monday that John Laurie Boulevard was closed between Nose Hill Drive and Ranchland Boulevard N.W.
Calgary police said alcohol, drugs and speed are not factors in the collision. Police said Thursday that the driver was uninjured. The Calgary Police Service Traffic Unit continues to investigate.
Carolynn Fisher lives in the area, and frequently walks her dog near the intersection where the crash took place. She said vehicles often drive at a quicker pace down Hawkwood Drive approaching the intersection.
“The drivers going down the hill are often going at a pretty good clip,” she said. “No matter who it is, it’s a tragedy, and I think more attention needs to be paid to the driving situation here.”
