Rehtaeh Parsons case spurs NS government efforts against sex assault

HALIFAX – Nova Scotia’s opposition parties say they are ready to work with the provincial government to find solutions to combat bullying and sexual assault.

Premier Darrell Dexter says the minister responsible for the status of women will work with the ministers of justice, education, health and community services to assess support services for people who face sexual violence.

He told the legislature he wants a timely response in order to satisfy the public’s concerns about the Rehtaeh Parsons case.

Liberal Leader Stephen McNeil calls the response a good first step and says his party will suggest ways to improve protocols and procedures to help families touched by violence.

But McNeil says there needs to be “real teeth” in legislation to deal with issues such as bullying and cyberbullying.

Progressive Conservative Leader Jamie Baillie agrees that stronger legislation is needed.

He also says the government should adopt all of the recommendations put forward last year by a task force on bullying.
