When it opened in June of 1964, it was the most expensive piece of highway in Canada.
But almost fifty years later, the old Port Mann Bridge has been replaced, too small to carry the immense volume of cars and trucks that cross it every day.
Today, the provincial government held a ceremony to commemorate the old Port Mann Bridge, and transportation minister Mary Polak unveiled a 1964 commemorative plaque from the original bridge, as well as a new plaque to mark the opening of the new crossing.
Both plaques will be mounted along the brand new port Mann bridge pedestrian and cycling path once all 10 lanes have been completed.
