MONTREAL – The mother of acid attack victim Tanya St-Arnauld couldn’t believe her ears when she was first told the news.
“It’s so aggravating, it’s aggravating. She suffered so much”.
Linda St-Arnauld is furious with a request made by 28-year-old Nikolas Stefanatos on Tuesday morning at the Longueuil Courthouse.
Stefanatos, who is behind bars for spraying St-Arnauld’s daughter Tanya with corrosive acid, is prepared to ask the court to move his upcoming trial out of Longueuil. It’s believed he worries he will not be able to get a fair trial in the city where the crime was committed.
“What this means for my daughter? Additional stress and delays. It’s just hard. Let’s get on with it. She wants justice!”, Linda St-Arnauld told Global’s Domenic Fazioli.
Police arrested Stefanatos last August outside their apartment on Ste-Catherine Street in Longueuil. Following an argument, he allegedly threw an industrial drain cleaner in the young woman’s face.
She suffered third degree burns to twenty per cent of her body.
Her face, head, hands, and parts of her upper body were burned.
Crown prosecutor Erin Kavanagh hinted to reporters Tuesday she plans to fight the request.
“I’m going to wait and see the motion before I take a position, but we’d like to hear the file here”, Kavangh said.
Arguments could be presented in court in the coming months.
29 year old Tanya St-Arnauld is slowly recovering. She’s been in and out of hospital and therapy centers since last August. She still faces major surgery to her scalp but in the coming weeks, St-Arnauld will meet with plastic surgeons in Florida. Thanks to an appearance on U.S. talk show, Anderson Cooper, American plastic surgeons have agreed to help her at no cost.
