The Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board says the crude oil was mixed in with a so-called produced-water discharge.

The board says the produced water — a byproduct of drilling — is normally dumped in the ocean but more oil than usual was in the mix.

The board says there was a problem with a separator aboard the Suncor-operated platform.
