Fire Marshal must look into better staffing after fatal East Gwillimbury fire: OPFFA

The Ontario Professional Firefighters Association wants to hear from the province’s fire marshal on whether firefighter staffing was a factor in last month’s fatal house fire north of Toronto.

The blaze in East Gwillimbury killed four family members.

The Fire Marshal’s Office has said the lack of a working smoke detector prevented the family from escaping.

The firefighters association says it took 12 minutes for firefighters to respond and says the local fire chief said that time could have been cut in half if full-time staff had been on duty.

The association says the Fire Marshal must look into the issue of fire department staffing.
