The shock was profound. Easter Sunday and people were saying, “My God, I cannot believe this.”
No, not folks going to a tomb of a dead man and finding it empty. That was a long time ago and they said the same thing then, too.
That was the beginning of a new religion.
The shock was in Bellingham. Hundreds, maybe thousands of Canadians drove up to Costco and it was closed.
“My god,” they said. “How can they do this to us?”
They had driven all the way from Vancouver to celebrate the day by shopping and now the doors were closed.

“But it’s Easter,” said one angry woman. “Don’t they know it’s Easter? How come they’re closed?”
“Because it’s Easter,” someone said.
“But stores in Vancouver are open. Don’t they know the sacrifice we made driving all the way down here?”
Yes, it was true, stores in Vancouver were open, but they charge more than stores in Bellingham which many see as a sin, especially on Easter Sunday.
Then the woman drove off to Bellis Fair Mall, which is just down the street but it was closed, too.
“BY God! I’ll show them, I’ll go back to Vancouver and spend my money there,” she said.
Her two word prayer was emphatically emphasized.
But then driving north on Meridian Street, past the mall and past Costco she saw Wal-Mart. OPEN. Crowded. Parking lot full.
“There is a GOD!!” she said, and squeezed into a spot at the far end of the lot.
“Thank god, that’s all I can say,” she said. “Thank god. For a while I was doubting, but now I believe again.”
It was a miracle.
