Edmonton – A 60-year-old man has died after the truck he was driving was hit by a train in south Edmonton Monday morning.
Police say the victim was heading south on 71 street when the driver’s side of his vehicle was hit by a westbound train on Girard Road.
Investigators believe sunlight may have impeded the man’s ability to see the flashing lights as he approached the train tracks; although, investigators aren’t sure if that is the cause of the collision.

“You do have two independent eye witnesses that indicate that there seemed to be nothing. They watched the accident occur and that the driver looked up at the very last second to see the train hit him,” said Acting Inspector, Brian Knowles.
A man who was working near the location of the crash says he heard the train’s horn but didn’t actually see the crash.
“Heard the train laying on his horn more than usual and that was about it. We didn’t hear a crunch or didn’t hear an accident. We just heard him really laying on the horn,” said Corey Setter.
Police say there’s no evidence the driver of the truck was speeding.
The driver was the only person in the vehicle.
The Edmonton Police Service along with Canadian Pacific police are continuing to investigate the fatal collision.
