ENGLISHTOWN, N.S. – RCMP in Nova Scotia are investigating the possibility that a missing man who was last seen at a gas station in Cape Breton may have drove off a ferry and into St. Anns Bay a few hours later.

Staff Sgt. Craig Yorke said 81-year-old , was reported missing around 2:30 p.m. on Friday.

Yorke says Hedgeveld and his 2007 silver Toyota Camry were last seen at a gas station in Baddeck, N.S., on Monday around 5 p.m.

But because officials have not recovered the car that drove off the Englishtown ferry around 8:45 p.m. the same night, they cannot say if the vehicle is Hedgeveld’s.

“What we have in relation to the vehicle going over the ramp is a silver or grey vehicle. We’re not really sure on the make or the model,” said Yorke in an interview on Saturday afternoon.

“The big part of the search is getting down into the water again and trying to locate this vehicle and bring it to shore just to confirm if it’s the vehicle belonging to Hedgeveld and if there is a person inside.”

The car had driven up a ramp and tipped over the side, plunging into the water as the strong current rushed out to sea.

Police had hoped to resume their search for the car on Saturday, but icy conditions in St. Anns Bay made it unsafe for divers enter the water.

Yorke said he expects it will take another few days before the ice clears from the bay.
