CALGARY- Thousands of Calgarians marked Friday’s religious holiday with the 30th annual Stations of the Cross.

The Good Friday tradition is meant to reflect on the meaning of Jesus’ suffering, and saw about 3,500 people walk through downtown Calgary, taking turns carrying a large cross. The Stations of the Cross is meant to symbolize the belief that after Christ’s resurrection, his mother Mary visited all the places of His suffering and death.

The event began on Friday morning at St. Mary’s Cathedral, and the procession wound its way through the downtown core before ending up back at the cathedral. It attracts mostly people of the Catholic faith, but everyone is welcome to join.

Participants stop at 14 stations along the route, contemplating themes such as the homeless, the ill and those persecuted for their convictions.

Organizers say this year’s walk saw a record turnout.
