The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) is investigating after a car carrying two men smashed into a parked pickup truck on Kingsway early Thursday.

In a news release, police said they saw a silver Chevrolet Cobalt travelling east at high speed along 118 Avenue and 123 Street at around 12:45 a.m.

Investigators believe the car was trying to merge on to Kingsway from 118 Avenue when it went over the sidewalk and hit a parked green Ford F-150.

Police said the passenger of the car suffered minor injuries, and the driver sustained life-threatening injuries.

Both men were taken to hospital.

The EPS Major Collision Investigation Section has taken over the case.

Police said they believe speed was a factor in the crash, and are investigating whether impairment was also a factor.
